The historical Swedish winner of Match Cup Sweden 2007 has now received another trophy. Björn Hansen was recently awarded the Swedish sailor of 2007. The prizewinning sailor has no hesitation about the highlight of the successful year: “The highlight last year was Match Cup Sweden in Marstrand, it was in my home waters and it felt great to perform such results there. Since I sailed in Marstrand my first time, in 1994, I had dreamt of winning the event.”
The motivation from the Jury follows: “Björn Hansen, of Gamla Stans Yacht Sällskap, and his crew became the first Swedish winners of Match Cup Sweden in Marstrand. Thereafter he reached the final in Bermuda Gold Cup and took third place in the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia. These results put Hansen in fourth place in the final standings of the World Match Racing Tour, the sailing series that now is the official World Championship in Match Racing. They also win the award for the sailorship, team work and humbleness they showed during Match Cup Sweden in the toughest international competition and in the rapidly changing, extraordinary weather.”
Björn Hansen continues: “This feels absolutely fantastic, incredible. It is often the skipper that gets the attention but I want to emphasize that we are a team that has won this. Last year we were 19 people that alternated in the crew and contributed to this award. We have all put in to get us here, since 1997.”
