Marstrand

One week every summer the picturesque and beautiful island of Marstrand transforms from a quiet archipelago village into a hotspot of the Swedish summer. With a hundred thousand plus visitors, the best match racing sailors in the world, the business society mingling, exciting nightlife and entertainment for the entire family, everyone is invited to a truly amazing week.

Match Cup Sweden has become Sweden's largest international sailing event and a natural meeting spot with over 15 000 accredited guest in 2013.

Marstrand was founded by King Haakon IV in the 1200s and became, together with the rest of Bohuslän a part of Sweden in connection with the Peace of Roskilde in 1658. Shipping, trade and fishing has been the city's primary industries, but their luck has varied in pace with the availability of herring, which has ruled the city's prosperity. It has also been affected by war several times during both the Danish-Norwegian and Swedish time.

Marstrand is a locality in Kungälvs municipality situated on two islands, the island of Marstrand and Koön. Marstrand is furthest out to sea, and home to the city center.

It is an idyllic town that in the summer is a major tourist destination and the Swedish sailing metropolis. Marstrand is a yearly basis for Marstrand Regatta, Stena Match Cup Sweden and other major sailing championships. The city became one of the earliest and most popular seaside resorts, which were particularly high status thanks to King Oscar II's annual visit.

Explore the island, visit the fort and give the lighthouse a hug! Just 40 minutes from Gothenburg, you'll find the adventure!

Organization

Match Cup Sweden is organized through the partnership between Brandspot and the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club (GKSS). After the pause in the event in 2006, due to changed sponsorship laws in Sweden, Brandspot bought the commercial rights to the event and have since run the event together with GKSS Event.

Together with a group of sponsors, partners and the heroic effort from around 130 volunteers the event is built up, more or less from scratch, during only a few days ahead of the regatta, thanks to meticulous planning. After a week of sailing, socializing and enjoying the beautiful island that is Marstrand, the same group of people perform yet another amazing feat, to pack up the event and leave Marstrand in an even better shape than it was in when the event moved in.

None of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors, volunteers and of course the municipality of Kungälv.
